Former political adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has expressed deep skepticism about the ability of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to recover in time for the 2027 general elections, declaring that the party’s decline may be irreversible.
Baba-Ahmed made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television, where he argued that the PDP has struggled to find its footing since losing power in 2015 after years of dominance at the federal level.
According to him, the party has remained trapped in internal turmoil, with persistent divisions preventing it from presenting a united and credible opposition. He maintained that the PDP’s internal crisis has worsened over time, leaving little hope for meaningful reform.
He noted that while the PDP is often viewed as the primary opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), it is not the only platform capable of challenging the government, pointing to parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and others as potential alternatives.
Baba-Ahmed argued that the focus on criticizing the ruling government has overshadowed the extent of damage the PDP has inflicted on itself, adding that the party has been in steady decline for several years.
Reflecting on the PDP’s loss of power, he said many of its leaders were unprepared for life in opposition, despite their long experience in governance, and struggled to adapt after their electoral defeat.
Speaking more broadly about Nigeria’s political direction ahead of 2027, Baba-Ahmed acknowledged that President Tinubu bears responsibility for certain political developments, particularly his growing influence across the political space. However, he stressed that this alone does not explain the PDP’s predicament.
He explained that while Tinubu’s ability to attract politicians into his fold may appear powerful, it does not necessarily translate into genuine political strength.
Baba-Ahmed lamented that the PDP’s failure to resolve its internal conflicts has repeatedly created openings for defections, strengthening the ruling party at the expense of the opposition.
He recalled that the PDP has a history of internal fractures, noting that similar splits weakened the party ahead of the 2015 elections and that the same pattern is unfolding once again.
According to him, the party’s inability to maintain unity and manage disagreements has significantly contributed to its current state, leaving it ill-prepared to mount a serious challenge in the next election cycle.
