PDP Board of Trustees Reaffirms Backing for Turaki-Led NWC, Denounces Secretariat Incursion

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has publicly reaffirmed its confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, describing the leadership as legitimate and properly elected.

The statement was issued by the BoT chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, who emphasised that the party’s national convention held in Ibadan followed the necessary constitutional procedures and electoral guidelines.

BoT Defends Legitimacy of Ibadan Convention

According to the trustees, the convention that produced the current NWC reflected the collective choice of delegates and party stakeholders from across the country.

According to Gossip News Now reports that the board stated it had carefully reviewed the process and concluded that the election of the Turaki-led leadership complied fully with the PDP Constitution, the Electoral Act, and established internal procedures.

The BoT therefore insisted that the outcome of the convention remains binding and legitimate.

Strong Reaction to Secretariat Incident

The trustees also reacted sharply to a recent disruption at the party’s National Secretariat, describing the incident as an organised attempt to undermine the party’s leadership.

Wabara alleged that individuals who had been previously expelled from the party, alongside hired supporters, attempted to forcefully take control of the premises.

He further claimed that the same group obstructed several key figures from entering the secretariat during the confrontation.

Party Leaders Reportedly Affected

Among those said to have been prevented from accessing the party complex were:

  • PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki
  • Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed
  • Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde
  • Other senior party officials and stakeholders

Despite the tension, the BoT commended party members who remained calm and maintained support for the recognised leadership.

Criticism of Statements from Expelled Members

The board also criticised public statements made by individuals who have been expelled from the party, accusing them of attempting to discredit the Ibadan convention.

Wabara suggested that some of these comments were aimed at creating confusion among party supporters and weakening internal cohesion.

He warned that efforts to question the legitimacy of the convention could undermine democratic principles within the party.

Call for Security Investigation

In response to the reported incident at the secretariat, the BoT urged the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The board stressed that those responsible for the disruption should be identified and held accountable to prevent similar incidents in the future.

According to the trustees, maintaining professionalism and neutrality within security institutions is essential for protecting democratic processes.

Commentary and Analysis

The latest statement from the PDP’s Board of Trustees reflects ongoing efforts by the party’s leadership to stabilise internal structures following a period of intense political disagreement.

Support from the BoT carries symbolic importance because the body serves as the party’s highest advisory institution. Its endorsement of the Turaki-led NWC could strengthen the leadership’s authority as it attempts to consolidate control.

However, political analysts note that internal disputes within major political parties often take time to resolve, particularly when rival factions remain active.

As the PDP prepares for the 2027 general elections, maintaining unity among party members and preventing further internal conflicts may prove crucial to its strategy as a leading opposition party.
