PDP Faction Shifts Ekiti Governorship Primary Over ‘Logistics Issues’

Spread the love

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has pushed back its planned governorship primary in Ekiti State, saying the exercise could no longer hold on the earlier scheduled date because of logistical difficulties. The postponement adds another layer of uncertainty to the party’s preparations in the state at a time when internal divisions are already drawing attention.

The decision was communicated in a letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission. The correspondence was signed by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who identified themselves respectively as acting national chairman and national secretary of the faction. In the message, they explained that circumstances beyond their control made it impossible to conduct the congress and primary as planned.

Although the faction pointed to logistics as the reason for the delay, it did not spell out the exact nature of the problems that forced the sudden adjustment. What it made clear, however, was that a replacement date would be announced later after fresh internal arrangements had been completed. For now, the exercise remains in limbo, leaving aspirants and delegates without certainty over the immediate next step.

The postponement is significant because it comes against the backdrop of an escalating struggle within the PDP over control of party structures. The camp behind the decision is widely associated with allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a development that further connects the Ekiti situation to the larger factional battle unfolding at the national level. According to Gossip News Now, the delay is being seen by many observers as more than a simple scheduling issue, given the wider contest for influence inside the opposition party.

For those involved in the race, the shift means a period of waiting and fresh calculation. Aspirants who had been preparing for the primary must now hold their positions while delegates also remain on standby. The uncertainty could affect momentum within the camps of interested contestants, especially in a political environment where timing often shapes advantage.

The development also raises fresh questions about how deeply the PDP’s internal conflicts are affecting its state-level processes. When basic electoral activities such as primaries are delayed without a clear alternative date, it reinforces the impression of a party still struggling to impose order on itself. That image could become more damaging if the postponement leads to further confusion or competing claims over legitimacy.

Even so, the faction insisted that the process has not been abandoned. It assured INEC that a new timetable would be communicated as soon as outstanding issues are resolved. Until then, the Ekiti governorship primary remains another flashpoint in the broader PDP crisis, with party members watching closely for what comes next.

Commentary and Analysis

This postponement may have been officially blamed on logistics, but in the current state of the PDP, it is difficult to separate logistics from politics. Internal power struggles often show up first as procedural delays, and the Ekiti development fits that pattern. The fact that the faction involved is linked to a major bloc within the party only makes the move more politically charged.

The bigger concern for the PDP is the signal this sends ahead of future elections. A party hoping to present itself as a strong national alternative cannot afford repeated uncertainty around its own internal exercises. If the Ekiti primary delay drags on or becomes another arena for factional confrontation, it may deepen doubts about the party’s readiness to manage larger electoral battles beyond its internal disputes.
