A fresh legal confrontation appears to be looming ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepares to challenge the electoral authorities over the absence of its candidate from the official list of contestants.
The controversy emerged after Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) publicly displayed the names of governorship candidates and their running mates at its office in Ado-Ekiti. The published document contained nominees from 12 political parties expected to participate in the election. However, the PDP’s flagbearer, Wole Oluyede, did not appear on the list, triggering strong objections from the opposition party.
Party Rejects Electoral Commission’s Action
In a statement issued on behalf of the party, Ini Ememobong, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, criticised the electoral commission for what he described as an unjustifiable omission. According to him, the party considers the decision both improper and damaging to the integrity of the electoral process.
Ememobong argued that the party’s candidate emerged through a primary election that complied with all regulatory requirements. From the PDP’s perspective, there was no legal barrier preventing INEC from listing Oluyede as the party’s official nominee.
Questions Over the Nomination Process
The party also drew attention to the role played by electoral officials during its internal selection exercise. PDP leaders claim that representatives of the commission attended and monitored the governorship primary that produced Oluyede as the party’s candidate.
They further asserted that reports issued after the exercise confirmed that the primary election was conducted in accordance with electoral guidelines and existing laws.
Dispute Over Submission Procedures
Beyond the primary election itself, the PDP highlighted what it believes were irregularities surrounding the candidate nomination process. According to party officials, the commission initially granted the necessary digital portal access codes required for candidate submissions.
However, the party claims those access credentials were later disabled shortly before the deadline, forcing them to resort to manual submission of documents. PDP leaders insist that the electoral body acknowledged receiving those materials.
Legal Action Begins
Following the exclusion, the opposition party has resolved to pursue judicial intervention. The PDP stated that legal proceedings have already been initiated to compel the commission to include Oluyede among the officially recognised candidates.
Party leaders maintain that ignoring a properly nominated candidate could create an avoidable constitutional dispute and undermine public confidence in the electoral system.
Warning Over Democratic Implications
The PDP also cautioned that decisions perceived as unfair or partisan could have long-term consequences for the credibility of the electoral body. According to the party, any action that appears to favour or disadvantage certain political actors risks weakening trust in democratic institutions.
It urged the electoral commission to uphold the principles of neutrality and transparency in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
Commentary and Analysis
The dispute highlights recurring tensions between political parties and electoral authorities in Nigeria, particularly regarding candidate nominations and administrative procedures.
While legal battles over candidate eligibility are not uncommon, such conflicts often shape the political narrative ahead of major elections. If the court rules in favour of the PDP, it could reinforce the idea that internal party processes, once properly conducted, must be respected by electoral institutions.
On the other hand, the case may also prompt further scrutiny of how candidate submissions are processed, especially the reliance on digital portals and administrative deadlines.
As the Ekiti governorship race approaches, the outcome of the legal challenge could significantly influence both the political environment in the state and public confidence in the electoral system.
