Former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains vibrant, united, and resilient despite media claims suggesting otherwise.
Jonathan emphasized that the PDP continues to be a major force in Nigeria’s political landscape, describing it as the only remaining original political party formed in 1998 that has endured over the years.
Gossip News Now reports that he made the statement while hosting members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by National Chairman Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, during a strategic consultation held at his private Abuja office on Tuesday evening, January 6, 2026.
The key focus of the meeting was the party’s reconciliation efforts and overall restructuring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Jonathan reiterated that the PDP has the legacy, experience, and internal capacity needed to overcome its current challenges, noting that the party represents more than a political platform—it functions as an essential national institution.
He stated, “The PDP, being the only original political party that has remained intact since 1998, has played a central role in shaping our democracy since 1999. I am a direct beneficiary of this party, which afforded me the opportunity to serve as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and ultimately President. I remain grateful and committed to doing my part because I owe so much to this party.”
Jonathan also appealed to party leaders to prioritize national stability and long-term institutional growth over personal ambition, stressing that strong political parties are the backbone of any functioning democracy.
In his response, Dr. Turaki expressed appreciation for Jonathan’s guidance and loyalty to the PDP throughout its journey.
He assured the former President that the current leadership is fully dedicated to a comprehensive “Rebirth Agenda” aimed at rebuilding and repositioning the party.
“We are here to seek your counsel and to update you on both the opportunities and trials facing the party. Our mission is to return power to the people and restore the PDP as the preferred choice of the majority of Nigerians. We are engaging all aggrieved stakeholders because a united PDP remains the most effective platform for a stable and prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki said.
The delegation included prominent members such as Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke, as well as other NWC officials.
