PDP Leadership Rally Behind New NWC, Turaki

Fresh efforts to unify the Peoples Democratic Party are underway after influential party stakeholders expressed support for the newly constituted National Working Committee headed by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. The renewed backing comes in the wake of the party’s 2025 National Convention held in Ibadan.

Party insiders say the move represents a deliberate attempt to rebuild cohesion within the PDP following leadership changes at the convention. Key organs and political blocs across the party structure have reportedly aligned themselves with the new executive leadership.

To demonstrate solidarity and foster internal coordination, the party has planned several strategic meetings in Abuja. These gatherings are expected to bring together various party stakeholders in discussions aimed at strengthening internal structures and outlining the party’s direction moving forward.

According to a statement issued by the party’s National Organizing Secretary, Theophilus Dakas Shan, numerous influential groups within the PDP have already mobilized in support of the new leadership team. Among those involved are state party chairmen, lawmakers from the National Assembly, ex-officio members, as well as associations of former governors, ministers, and previous members of the National Working Committee.

Schedule of Key Party Consultations

The PDP leadership has mapped out a series of engagements designed to encourage collaboration between the new NWC and various power blocs within the party. Rather than holding a single gathering, the consultations will take place through multiple meetings involving different groups.

The engagement plan includes:

  • Initial consultations between the NWC and state chairmen, alongside separate discussions with members of the House of Representatives and national ex-officio officials.
  • A strategic meeting with experienced party figures, including former governors, ministers, and past NWC members, aimed at drawing on their institutional knowledge.
  • A dedicated session with the Senate caucus, allowing lawmakers in the upper legislative chamber to align with the party’s new leadership direction.

Party officials believe these interactions will help reinforce unity after the convention and ensure a shared vision among the party’s leadership structures.

Ekiti Governorship Candidate to Receive Certificate

During one of the scheduled gatherings, the party leadership is also expected to formally present the Certificate of Return to Oluwole Oluyede. The presentation confirms him as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in Ekiti State, slated for June 20, 2026.

The ceremony is intended not only as a procedural step but also as a show of confidence in the party’s electoral preparations for upcoming state contests.

Appeal Panel Set Up for Osun Primary Disputes

In another development, the PDP has created a review panel to examine complaints arising from its recent governorship primary election in Osun State. The committee consists of 24 members and will consider appeals related to the party’s candidate selection process ahead of the 2026 governorship poll.

The panel will be chaired by Turaki himself, while Taofeek Arapaja will serve as secretary. Proceedings are scheduled to take place at the Bauchi Governors Lodge located in the Asokoro district of Abuja.

Party officials emphasized that the panel’s work will strictly follow the party’s constitution as amended in 2025, alongside the guidelines governing internal party primaries and relevant provisions of Nigeria’s Electoral Act.

Commentary and Analysis

The PDP’s recent moves indicate a strategic attempt to stabilize the party and rebuild confidence after leadership transitions. Political observers note that strong internal coordination is critical for opposition parties seeking to present a credible challenge in future elections.

By engaging multiple stakeholder groups—including lawmakers, former office holders, and grassroots leaders—the party appears to be prioritizing consensus-building within its ranks.

However, analysts also point out that sustaining unity in large political parties can be challenging, particularly when internal elections generate disputes. The establishment of the Osun appeal panel suggests the PDP leadership is aware of this risk and is attempting to address grievances through institutional processes.

As the party reorganizes after its convention, the coming months may reveal whether these consolidation efforts translate into stronger opposition politics across Nigeria’s political landscape.
