Preparations for the next governorship election in Osun State have taken a significant step forward following an announcement by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The opposition party has confirmed that its candidate selection process will soon move into its final stage.

According to Gossip News Now, the PDP leadership revealed that its primary election for the Osun governorship race will take place on December 2, 2025. The exercise will determine the party’s official candidate ahead of the state election.

The confirmation came through a statement issued by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Theophilus Dakas Shan. In the announcement, the party emphasized that all necessary preparations for the primary had been completed.

Party officials disclosed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already been informed about the timetable and logistics for the planned primary election.

The selection process is expected to take place in the Osun State capital, Osogbo, where party delegates will gather to vote for their preferred candidate. Organizers stated that the voting exercise will commence at 10 a.m. under the supervision of a specially appointed electoral committee.

Before arriving at this stage, the party conducted a series of preparatory delegate congresses designed to determine those eligible to participate in the voting process. These congresses were held on separate dates in late November and were described by party officials as successful.

The delegate exercises completed in November included two major gatherings:

  • An ad hoc delegates congress organized earlier in the week
  • A national delegates congress conducted shortly afterward

Party leaders say the completion of these internal processes has paved the way for the final governorship primary.

In addition to confirming the election date, the party also issued a warning to aspirants and their supporters. Officials reminded contestants that discipline and respect for party rules remain essential as the contest reaches its decisive stage.

The leadership warned that any actions capable of undermining the party’s constitution or internal regulations would attract disciplinary consequences.

Commentary and Analysis

Primary elections often represent one of the most critical stages in Nigeria’s political process, as they determine which candidate will represent a party in the general election. For the PDP, ensuring a transparent and orderly primary in Osun could help strengthen internal unity ahead of the state contest.

Political observers note that internal disputes during primaries sometimes weaken party cohesion, especially if aspirants feel the process is unfair. For this reason, strict adherence to established guidelines and party regulations will likely play a key role in maintaining stability within the PDP.

With the December 2 primary approaching, attention will now turn to how aspirants conduct their campaigns and whether the party can successfully manage the competition without internal conflicts.
