The Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State has publicly criticised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa following the reported death of a teenager allegedly struck during a convoy movement linked to the governor’s activities.

The incident reportedly occurred in Oka-Akoko, the administrative centre of Akoko South-West Local Government Area, during a tour organised to appreciate residents across communities in the state.

Party officials expressed concern about the circumstances surrounding the death of the young victim identified as Good Emiju.

According to the opposition party, the teenager was allegedly hit by a vehicle believed to be connected to the governor’s convoy while the tour was ongoing.

In a statement released by the party’s Director of Media and Public Communications, Wande Ajayi, the PDP questioned the lack of an immediate public explanation from the state government.

The party described the perceived silence from the governor’s office as troubling and said the situation deserved clarification for the sake of transparency.

Ajayi also raised concerns about the medical response after the accident.

According to the PDP, the teenager was initially taken to the General Hospital in Oka-Akoko for urgent treatment.

The party claimed that the facility allegedly lacked the capacity to manage the emergency effectively.

Following the initial medical attempt, the victim was reportedly moved to the Federal Medical Centre Owo where doctors later confirmed his death.

The opposition party further expressed unease about reports indicating that the teenager had already been buried.

In its statement, the PDP insisted that the public deserved a clear account of what transpired and demanded that the government provide details about the incident.

The party maintained that failing to address the matter publicly would be disrespectful to the deceased and his family.

However, the Ondo State government rejected the allegations.

In a response issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Allen Sowore, officials denied that the governor’s convoy had any connection with the reported accident.

The statement from the governor’s office stressed that the convoy was not involved in any crash on the day the incident allegedly occurred.

Government representatives also maintained that throughout the statewide thank-you tour, there had been no record of such an accident involving the governor’s convoy.

Commentary and Analysis

The disagreement between the Ondo PDP and the state government highlights how sensitive incidents involving political convoys can quickly escalate into public controversy.

In many parts of Nigeria, convoys of high-ranking officials are often accompanied by heavy security and rapid movement, which can sometimes create tension or fear among road users.

When accidents or allegations arise in such situations, public expectations for swift clarification are usually high.

Opposition parties often demand transparency in order to ensure accountability, while governments frequently move to protect their officials from what they consider unfounded claims.

Beyond the political dimension, the incident also draws attention to broader concerns about emergency medical infrastructure in some communities.

Questions raised about the ability of local hospitals to manage critical injuries illustrate ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s healthcare system, particularly in semi-urban areas.

How the state authorities address both the allegations and the concerns about medical response may ultimately influence public perception of governance and accountability in Ondo State.
