PDP State Chairmen Reject Abdulrahman Mohammed Faction, Reaffirm Support for Umar Damagum

The Forum of State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party has thrown its weight firmly behind Umar Damagum, making it clear that he remains the party’s legitimate National Chairman. In doing so, the forum also rejected the faction associated with Abdulrahman Mohammed, describing that camp as lacking constitutional standing within the PDP.

The position of the chairmen was made known after their meeting held on Thursday, November 6, where members of the 29-state forum reviewed the state of the party and the growing leadership dispute. Their message was direct: under the PDP constitution as amended, there is only one recognised national chairman, and that office is still occupied by Damagum. By taking that stand, the group sought to shut down uncertainty over competing claims to the party’s top leadership seat.

The chairmen also used the occasion to praise what they described as ongoing cooperation among the party’s recognised organs. They pointed to the working relationship between the National Working Committee, the PDP Governors’ Forum led by Bala Mohammed, and the Board of Trustees under Senator Adolphus Wabara as evidence that the legitimate structure of the party remains intact. According to Gossip News Now, this coordinated show of support was intended to project stability in the midst of growing internal friction.

Beyond leadership recognition, the forum stressed the need for discipline across all state chapters. It urged local party structures to invoke the relevant provisions of the PDP constitution against members whose actions threaten internal cohesion. In essence, the chairmen signaled that anyone working against the unity or stability of the party should expect sanctions rather than tolerance.

With the National Convention approaching, the forum also called on all duly recognised delegates to take part actively in the process. It said the convention must be guided by transparency, fairness, and true internal democracy if the party hopes to restore confidence among members and the wider public. The chairmen appeared keen to frame the upcoming gathering not just as an event, but as an opportunity to reinforce legitimacy and rebuild trust.

The forum further pledged continued cooperation with the Damagum-led National Working Committee, saying it remains committed to the growth, unity, and electoral success of the party at every level. That promise was presented as part of a broader determination to strengthen the PDP from within and better position it for future contests.

Commentary and Analysis

The endorsement of Umar Damagum by the PDP state chairmen is significant because it adds another institutional layer of support in the ongoing leadership struggle. In party politics, recognition by influential blocs often matters as much as formal titles, and this declaration suggests that Damagum still commands meaningful backing within the PDP’s established structure.

At the same time, the statement reveals a party trying to contain a widening crisis before it causes deeper damage. By rejecting Abdulrahman Mohammed’s faction, calling for discipline, and rallying support for the convention, the chairmen are clearly trying to prevent the leadership conflict from spiraling further. Whether that strategy succeeds will depend on how much unity can be maintained in practice, but for now, the forum has drawn a clear line on where it stands.
