Serious tension erupted at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, as supporters of two opposing factions engaged in a heated confrontation over control of the party structure.
The incident occurred when loyalists aligned with different political camps gathered at the secretariat at the same time, each determined to assert influence over the party’s leadership activities scheduled for the day.
Scenes around the complex quickly turned chaotic as party members argued loudly and engaged in physical scuffles. Security operatives, including heavily armed police officers, were deployed in large numbers to prevent the situation from escalating further.
According to Gossip News Now, the clash reflects the deepening internal struggle between two powerful blocs within the PDP. One faction is linked to the camp of newly elected National Chairman Kabiru Turaki, while the opposing group is associated with supporters of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, represented politically by party figure Samuel Anyanwu.
Reports indicate that the Wike-aligned camp arrived at the secretariat earlier in the day and had already positioned themselves inside the premises. Later, members of the Turaki faction, which includes influential PDP governors, pushed their way into the building, creating a tense standoff that drew the attention of security personnel.
During the confrontation, police reportedly fired tear gas to disperse agitated supporters who had gathered around the secretariat gates. Eyewitnesses described a confusing situation in which rival groups shouted slogans, displayed placards, and attempted to dominate access to the party facility.
Among the political leaders backing the Turaki faction are notable governors such as Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, both of whom have been active in the ongoing leadership dispute.
At the centre of the crisis are two separate meetings that had been scheduled by the opposing camps. Each faction planned its own political gathering at the party headquarters, creating a direct clash of authority.
The meetings involved different leadership structures within the party, including:
- Sessions connected to the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) organised by the Wike-aligned group
- An inaugural gathering of the National Working Committee (NWC) arranged by the Turaki-led leadership
One of the governors supporting Turaki reportedly insisted that their group had the right to proceed with its meeting, stressing that there was no legal directive preventing them from using the party headquarters.
Meanwhile, Kabiru Turaki himself had earlier indicated his intention to lead the newly formed leadership team. He had publicly stated that the meeting of the National Working Committee would mark a significant step in consolidating the party’s direction under the new leadership.
However, the Wike-backed faction continues to challenge the legitimacy of the convention that produced Turaki as national chairman. Members of that camp insist that the previous leadership structure remains valid and that any attempt to replace it is unacceptable.
Commentary and Analysis
The dramatic scenes at Wadata Plaza highlight the serious internal divisions currently affecting the PDP. Political analysts believe the struggle is not merely about access to the party headquarters but about long-term control of the party’s structure and strategy ahead of future elections.
When rival groups within a major political party organise parallel meetings and attempt to occupy the same political space, it signals a deeper institutional crisis. For the PDP, resolving this leadership dispute quickly may be crucial if the party hopes to maintain credibility as a major opposition force.
Observers also note that the involvement of influential governors and senior party figures suggests the conflict could intensify before a compromise is reached. Without dialogue and reconciliation, the ongoing power struggle risks weakening the party’s unity and electoral strength.
For now, the situation at the national secretariat has become a visible symbol of the broader political contest shaping the future of the PDP.
