Peter Obi Reasserts Labour Party Loyalty as ADC Coalition Faces Turbulence

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has acknowledged that the political alliance forming around the African Democratic Congress is currently encountering internal disagreements.

During a conversation on a YouTube programme organised by Advocacy for Good Governance, Obi explained that discussions within the coalition are still ongoing and that certain key issues—particularly those concerning zoning and power rotation—have not yet been fully settled.

Despite his involvement in coalition talks, Obi made it clear that he remains a loyal member of the Labour Party. According to him, participation in broader alliances does not change his political affiliation but reflects efforts among opposition leaders to explore collaborative pathways ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former presidential contender emphasised that any alliance seeking to present itself as an alternative must first develop clear guiding principles. He noted that coalition members should agree on shared national priorities before attempting to challenge the existing political structure.

Obi also highlighted the importance of transparency within the alliance, explaining that unresolved agreements about leadership arrangements—especially the rotation of major political offices—must be clarified to avoid misunderstandings later.

In discussing the coalition’s leadership, Obi spoke positively about some of the senior political figures involved, including David Mark and Atiku Abubakar, whom he described as experienced individuals with a deep understanding of the country’s political landscape.

He stressed that Nigerians deserve more than opposition rhetoric, arguing that any coalition hoping to gain public trust must present a convincing blueprint for governance.

According to Gossip News Now, Obi also warned against repeating mistakes from previous political transitions, suggesting that removing a government without presenting a credible policy direction would not necessarily produce meaningful national progress.

The former governor further stated that his political ambition is not driven by desperation for power but by a desire to see the country function effectively. In his view, genuine reform can still emerge if political actors commit to building consensus and presenting practical ideas to the electorate.

Commentary and Analysis

Obi’s remarks illustrate the complexities involved in building broad political coalitions in Nigeria’s multi-party system. Alliances often bring together individuals from different ideological backgrounds, which can make consensus on sensitive matters—such as zoning and leadership rotation—difficult to achieve.

Political observers note that the success of any opposition coalition will likely depend on how effectively it manages internal negotiations and communicates a clear policy agenda to voters.

As the 2027 election cycle gradually approaches, discussions around coalition-building are expected to intensify. Whether these alliances can transform early negotiations into a cohesive political movement remains one of the major questions shaping Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
