The 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has admitted that the emerging coalition with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is currently experiencing setbacks due to unresolved disagreements on zoning and the rotation of major political offices.

Speaking during a YouTube interview with Advocacy for Good Governance on Wednesday, Obi stressed that clarity, structure, and mutual understanding are essential for the coalition to function effectively.

Reaffirming that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party, the former Anambra State governor said the alliance must first resolve its internal differences and unify around a shared national vision.

Obi said:
“Today, I’m a member of the Labour Party, and I subscribe to the ADC coalition for the 2027 election. I believe in the idea, but I need to understand the fundamental principles we all agree to uphold. What are we offering the average Nigerian? We are all still part of the political class, not a new set of people, so we must come with new ideas Nigerians can trust.”

He praised coalition leaders such as former Senate President David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing them as experienced figures committed to Nigeria’s progress. However, he maintained that the coalition must address sensitive issues properly through open dialogue.

According to Obi, Nigerians deserve a credible alternative built on competence, character, capacity, commitment, and compassion.

“We can’t just say we don’t like what those in power are doing and push them out without presenting a credible alternative,” he said. “That mistake was made in 2015.”

He also highlighted lingering “unsigned agreements” concerning the presidency and office rotation, insisting that these must be clearly defined to avoid confusion in the future.

Obi reiterated that he is not desperate for power but is committed to seeing Nigeria work:
“I want to see what each group is truly offering. If Nigerians genuinely want change, we can achieve it—even if agreements are reached just months before the election.”
