Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, has opened up about his recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), framing the move as a step toward national unity and improved governance in Nigeria.
The announcement came on Wednesday in Enugu State, where Obi formally joined the ADC. In a statement shared across his social media channels, he called on supporters—including members of the Obidient Movement and other opposition groups nationwide—to consolidate under the leadership of ADC National Chairman, former Senate President David Mark, with the aim of fostering a stronger, more accountable government.
Obi stressed that Nigeria’s immense potential has been undermined by poor leadership and political manipulation. He urged that immediate action is needed to bring genuine, transformative leaders into power, protecting current and future generations from the fallout of mismanagement.
Highlighting the scale of support at the Enugu gathering, Obi noted the presence of distinguished figures, including former governors Okwesili Nwodo (Enugu), Achike Udenwa and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Emeka Ihedioha (Imo), as well as senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji. Community leaders and members of Federal and State Assemblies also attended.
The event drew representation from beyond the Igbo community, featuring prominent leaders such as Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State, and former Edo State Governor Senator Oserheimen Osunbor, among other ADC dignitaries.
In his remarks, Obi criticized systemic mismanagement, explaining that Nigeria’s difficulties are rooted not in scarcity but in a political culture that rewards mediocrity, punishes merit, and perpetuates corruption. “We are not poor; we have been looted into poverty. What we need is genuine, patriotic change—not cosmetic makeovers,” he stated.
Obi also presented a vision for national development and inclusivity, emphasizing:
- Agriculture and manufacturing as major drivers of GDP.
- Reductions in insecurity, corruption, unemployment, inflation, and illiteracy.
- Leadership that is honest, transparent, and responsive.
- National unity and effective governance for the benefit of all citizens.
Closing his address, Obi reinforced his call for a united opposition and collective effort for a renewed Nigeria. “I urge my leaders, associates, supporters, the Obidient Movement, and members of opposition parties to join a broad coalition under the African Democratic Congress. Guided by patriotism and national interest, Nigeria deserves leadership that unites, governs with empathy, and delivers real results. Together, with courage, unity, and resolve, we can build a new, productive, and inclusive Nigeria. A New Nigeria is possible.”
