Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has shed light on his decision to leave the party and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), emphasizing the urgent need for national unity and effective leadership.
Obi officially defected to the ADC on Wednesday in Enugu State, a move he described as being in the national interest. Speaking via a statement on his social media platforms, the former Anambra State Governor called on his supporters—including the Obidient Movement and members of opposition parties across Nigeria—to collaborate under the leadership of ADC National Chairman, former Senate President David Mark, to build a better Nigeria.
According to Obi, Nigeria possesses vast potential but has been shortchanged by ineffective leadership and deliberate political sabotage. He stressed that the time to install genuine, transformative leaders is now, in order to protect current and future generations from the consequences of poor governance.
Obi highlighted the diverse and distinguished figures who joined him in Enugu, including former governors Okwesili Nwodo (Enugu), Achike Udenwa and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), and Emeka Ihedioha (Imo). Prominent senators such as Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji were present, alongside community leaders and Federal and State Assembly members.
The historic gathering also featured leaders from outside the Igbo community, including Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal (former Governor of Sokoto State), former Edo State Governor Senator Oserheimen Osunbor, and other ADC dignitaries.
In his address, Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges stem not from a lack of resources but from systemic exploitation by a political class that rewards mediocrity, punishes merit, and perpetuates corruption. “We are not poor; we have been looted into poverty. What we need is genuine, patriotic change—not cosmetic makeovers,” he said.
He further outlined a vision for a productive and inclusive Nigeria:
- Agriculture and manufacturing as top contributors to GDP.
- Reduction of insecurity, corruption, unemployment, inflation, and illiteracy.
- Honest, transparent, and responsive leadership.
- National unity and effective governance for the benefit of all citizens.
Obi concluded by reaffirming his call for unity and national renewal: “I urge my leaders, associates, supporters, the Obidient Movement, and members of opposition parties to join a broad coalition under the African Democratic Congress. Guided by patriotism and national interest, Nigeria deserves leadership that unites, governs with empathy, and delivers real results. Together, with courage, unity, and resolve, we can build a new, productive, and inclusive Nigeria. A New Nigeria is possible.”
