Peter Obi: We Never Compelled Anyone to Join ADC – Abdullahi Responds to Obidients

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified its recent directive to coalition members, insisting that no one has been compelled to abandon their political parties and join the ADC.

The party had earlier directed all members of its coalition to resign from their respective parties and align fully with the ADC, though no timeline was provided. The announcement, delivered by ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi after a caucus meeting in Abuja, drew sharp criticism from the Obidient Movement, which warned that their principal, Peter Obi, could not be pressured into leaving the Labour Party.

Speaking to Punch, Abdullahi said the Obidients either misinterpreted the statement or reacted based on preconceived notions.

“It is either they did not read the story or they already had a pre-conceived position, because at no point did we compel anyone to join the ADC,” he explained. “We only said that every member of the coalition must leave their original party. Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai were given prerogatives, so I don’t understand where the outburst is coming from.”

Abdullahi stressed that the coalition’s decision had been consistent and never suggested coercion. He further argued that the Obidients’ criticisms should not be taken as Peter Obi’s personal position.

“We do not even believe their comments reflect Peter Obi’s attitude or opinion towards the coalition,” he added.
