The Nigeria Police Force has officially exonerated Ishaku Elisha Abbo, the former senator representing Adamawa North, in relation to a rape accusation made in September 2025. The allegation, which involved Mrs. Zainab Mohammed and her daughter, Khadija Mohammed, centered on an incident reportedly occurring at Abbo’s Katampe Extension residence in Abuja on June 29, 2025.
Following the complaint, the Inspector-General of Police ordered a comprehensive investigation spanning multiple units: the FCID Gender Unit, the National Cybercrime Centre, the Intelligence Tactical Unit, and the Police Medical Unit. The resulting report, dated October 23, 2025, and signed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police at the FCID, concluded that the evidence required to substantiate the allegation was insufficient.
Investigators highlighted significant delays in reporting the incident. The alleged assault took place on June 29, yet the formal petition was submitted on September 15, weakening the case. Police examinations of the residence on October 3, 2025, revealed no incriminating evidence, a result partly attributed to the long gap between the alleged event and the site inspection.
Medical findings further undermined the accusation. A report from Deda Hospital dated July 11, 2025, confirmed that Khadija Mohammed’s hymen was intact and concluded she remained a virgin approximately 11 days after the supposed incident. Tests for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and syphilis all returned negative.
The police report also noted difficulties with digital evidence. Although the complainant claimed to have stored key proof on a mobile phone, the device was never submitted for examination. Later, it was discovered that the phone had been flashed, preventing any recovery of forensic data.
Witness testimony reinforced the police’s findings. Only three individuals were present at the residence during the alleged event—the security personnel, Nafisa Mohammed, and Senator Abbo—all of whom denied any assault took place. Notably, prior to the accusation, Abbo had filed a police report on July 16, 2025, against Khadija and Nafisa Mohammed Chigli, alleging the theft of his wife’s gold jewellery.
Ultimately, the investigation found no supporting medical, testimonial, or forensic evidence. Abbo, when reached for comment, refrained from elaborating on the matter, stating succinctly, “God will expose all evil plans against me and reward the doers according to their deeds.”
Commentary
This resolution underscores the critical importance of timely reporting, evidence preservation, and proper forensic procedures in sexual assault allegations. Delays and gaps in documentation can severely undermine cases, regardless of the nature of the accusation. Legal experts suggest that Abbo’s exoneration highlights the need for complainants to maintain records, submit digital evidence promptly, and ensure medical examinations are conducted immediately following an alleged incident.
