The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended members of a criminal gang implicated in the recent assault on the convoy of former Labour and Employment Minister, Senator Chris Ngige.
During the operation, a gun battle erupted, resulting in the death of two suspects while several others sustained injuries as they fled the scene.
Police described the operation as a major success in ongoing efforts to eliminate criminal activities in the state and boost public security.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, acted on reliable intelligence to intercept the gang at Enugwu Agidi junction.
Ikenga explained that the suspects—believed to include armed robbers, cult members, and individuals linked to a proscribed secessionist group—opened fire when confronted by police.
“During the exchange, which lasted approximately two hours, two armed suspects were fatally shot, while three others escaped with injuries of varying severity,” he confirmed.
In the aftermath, officers recovered several items from the suspects, including:
- One T.06 rifle
- Two pump-action guns
- 24 rounds of T.06 ammunition
- 15 live cartridges
- Various criminal charms
- A cult red beret
- A black Toyota Highlander vehicle
Ikenga further revealed that one of the suspects, before dying from gunshot wounds, confessed that the gang had carried out the attack on Senator Ngige’s convoy.
The suspect also admitted to belonging to the strike squad of the Vikings confraternity, claiming their actions were retaliatory following the killing of a group member by a rival cult faction.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, lauded the officers for their bravery and urged them to continue tracking down the remaining fugitives.
“I commend the officers for their courage during this operation. We will relentlessly pursue these criminals and ensure they face justice,” Orutugu stated.
He also called on hospitals and healthcare providers to treat gunshot victims promptly and notify the nearest police station without delay.
