A live broadcast by Arise TV at a hotel in the Orazi area of Obio/Akpor Local Government, Rivers State, was reportedly disrupted by suspected political thugs. The incident occurred while the crew was interviewing Leloonu Nwibubasa, former Rivers State Commissioner for Employment Generation and Empowerment.

Reports indicate that the armed youths stormed the hotel on Tuesday night, forcing the interview to end abruptly. They allegedly made away with broadcast equipment, including cameras and accessories.

Sources revealed that the attack took place around 9:15 p.m., during Arise TV’s News Night segment, where Nwibubasa was discussing political developments in Rivers State. The disruption reportedly followed comments perceived as critical of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, prompting a hotel guest to alert the assailants.

Eyewitnesses said both Nwibubasa and the Arise TV cameraman narrowly escaped harm as the intruders searched hotel rooms, insisting that the interview was “anti-Wike” and should not occur in the area. “They were chanting in Ikwerre that such an interview would not be allowed on their land,” one source said. “They were forcing doors open, looking for the former commissioner and the crew.”

The chaos caused hotel staff and guests to flee in panic. Eventually, the thugs reached the interview location and threatened both Nwibubasa and the journalists, compelling them to stop the broadcast.

Arise TV reporter Andy Omano, who escaped the scene, contacted the police control room immediately. “The police responded and said they were on their way,” he said. “The Divisional Police Officer arrived with his team, and together with hotel management, ensured the commissioner and journalists were safely escorted out.”

The victims were taken to Kala Police Station, where statements were recorded. Station cameraman Promise confirmed that multiple pieces of equipment were taken, including a Sony Z280 camera, industrial tripod, wireless microphone, and other accessories. He noted that the attackers fled as soon as police arrived.

Nwibubasa condemned the attack, emphasizing its threat to democratic practices. “I was concluding the interview and talking about the 2027 general elections when this happened,” he said. “They were breaking doors, searching for me. Why? This is a free society. What happened is not healthy for democracy.”
