The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised politicians who recently aligned themselves with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that many of them failed to stand by the president during the decisive moments of the 2023 election campaign.
Wike delivered the remarks during a thanksgiving gathering organised by Chibudom Nwuche. The event took place in the Ochiba community within Ahoada East Local Government Area.
Praise for Local Supporters
During the occasion, the former governor of Rivers State acknowledged the commitment shown by residents of Ahoada East and neighbouring areas during the last presidential election.
According to him, the strong support recorded in communities such as Ahoada East and Ahoada West played a notable role in the electoral outcome that eventually produced Tinubu as Nigeria’s president.
Wike recalled that the campaign period was marked by uncertainty, with many political actors hesitant to openly back the candidate.
Loyalty During Difficult Moments
Reflecting on the election period, Wike said some politicians remained silent when Tinubu’s chances were still being debated across the country.
He contrasted that hesitation with the position taken by his political allies and supporters in Rivers State who publicly declared their backing during the campaign.
According to him, loyalty is most meaningful when it is demonstrated during challenging moments rather than after victory has already been secured.
Criticism of Recent Defections
The minister also appeared to reference recent political developments in Rivers State, including the defection of Siminalayi Fubara.
Wike suggested that some of the voices now declaring support for the president were not present when such support was politically risky.
In his view, political commitment should not be measured only by public slogans but by actions taken during the campaign period.
Debate Over Political Credit
Beyond the issue of loyalty, Wike also addressed claims regarding development projects in Rivers State.
He argued that a number of projects recently inaugurated by the current administration had been initiated and completed during his tenure as governor.
According to him, the projects were designed to ensure continuity in governance rather than serve as political talking points.
Commentary and Analysis
Wike’s remarks reflect the continuing political rivalry shaping Rivers State politics. Since leaving office as governor and assuming his current role at the federal level, his relationship with the state government has remained a subject of public discussion.
His comments also highlight a common theme in Nigerian politics—debates over loyalty and political timing. Politicians who join alliances after elections often face criticism from early supporters who believe they carried the risk during the campaign.
The minister’s criticism of late supporters may also be interpreted as an attempt to reinforce his political relevance and emphasise the role he played in Tinubu’s electoral success.
As political alignments continue to evolve ahead of future elections, statements such as these are likely to shape the ongoing contest for influence within both state and national politics.
