Controversial street-pop artist Portable was brought before the Federal High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State, on Monday, where he faced multiple criminal allegations ranging from assault to theft. The singer’s court appearance followed the circulation of a viral clip that showed him in police custody, sparking widespread public attention.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, the charges stem from a string of incidents allegedly linked to the performer. Authorities outlined a nine-count charge sheet that includes accusations of physical assault, inflicting bodily harm, theft, and resisting law enforcement officers in the discharge of their duties.
Central to the case is a complaint reportedly filed by his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, who accused the singer of assault. Prosecutors told the court that the alleged incident occurred at his bar located in the Iyana Ilogbo area during New Year’s Day celebrations. In addition to Ashabi, police claimed that several officers and other individuals were also affected during the confrontation.
The case extends beyond assault claims. Investigators also accused Portable of unlawfully taking possession of a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at ₦12 million. The vehicle, said to belong to Ileyemi Damilola, was reportedly sourced from Wally Dex Auto. Other names mentioned during proceedings included Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi, and Ebuka Odah.
During the hearing, testimonies were presented by relatives of Ashabi, even though she did not attend the session in person. Law enforcement officers further alleged that the singer obstructed and physically confronted a female police inspector while she was carrying out official duties.
When the matter of bail was raised, the presiding judge declined the request. The court noted that the police inspector allegedly assaulted had not yet testified, making it premature to consider releasing the defendant. As a result, Portable was ordered to remain in custody pending further proceedings, with the bail hearing adjourned to January 19.
In a related twist, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that it has initiated an inquiry into another viral video purportedly showing the singer being mistreated while in detention. Authorities stated that the investigation aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the footage.
Legal and Public Context
The case illustrates how celebrity status does not exempt individuals from legal scrutiny. High-profile figures often face intensified public reaction when allegations surface, particularly when incidents are amplified by viral content.
The denial of bail at this stage underscores the court’s emphasis on due process and the importance of hearing all relevant testimonies before making procedural decisions. Legal analysts note that in cases involving alleged assault on law enforcement officers, courts may adopt a cautious approach.
At the same time, the investigation into the detention video highlights the broader issue of accountability within the justice system. Allegations of misconduct—whether by defendants or authorities—require impartial examination to ensure fairness.
As proceedings continue, the outcome of both the criminal charges and the separate inquiry will likely shape public perception of the unfolding legal battle.
