Controversial singer Portable appeared on Monday before the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, where he faced a nine-count criminal charge that includes assault, theft, inflicting harm, and resisting arrest.
Ogun State police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed to TheCable Lifestyle that the charges stem from a series of incidents involving the singer, including an alleged assault on his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, among others.
His arraignment followed the circulation of a viral video on Sunday showing him in police custody. The footage was said to be linked to a complaint filed by Ashabi Simple, who accused him of assault.
Prosecutors claimed that Portable assaulted Ashabi along with multiple police officers and other individuals during an incident at his bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area on New Year’s Day.
Beyond the assault case, Portable is also accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300 worth ₦12 million, reportedly belonging to Ileyemi Damilola. The vehicle was said to have been obtained from Wally Dex Auto. Other individuals listed in the case include Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi, and Ebuka Odah.
During court proceedings, Ashabi’s siblings testified as witnesses to the alleged assault, even though she was not present. Police additionally accused Portable of obstructing and assaulting a female police inspector, Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was performing her official duties.
After hearing testimonies, the presiding judge declined to grant Portable bail, pointing out that the police inspector who was allegedly assaulted had not yet appeared in court. The judge ruled that her presence was necessary before deciding on the bail application.
As a result, Portable was remanded in custody, and a new bail hearing was set for January 19.
In a separate development, the Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing Portable being assaulted while in police custody. Authorities confirmed that the inquiry is ongoing as they work to establish the facts surrounding the footage.
