Presidency Takes Swipe at Peter Obi Over Switch to ADC

The Presidency has dismissed Peter Obi’s decision to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as politically insignificant and unlikely to alter Nigeria’s political equation.

The criticism came from Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, who reacted in a strongly worded statement titled “Imprisoned by Ambition: Welcome to 2027 — Peter Obi’s Reckless Misreading of Politics and Power.”

Dare argued that Obi’s departure from the Labour Party (LP) to the ADC failed to generate excitement or momentum, noting that the development was largely met with public indifference. According to him, the move followed a predictable pattern that Nigerians have witnessed repeatedly in the country’s political history.

He described Obi’s political messaging as tiresome, insisting that the shift to a new platform did not represent a bold new vision but rather the final phase of an already exhausted political approach.

The presidential aide further accused the former Anambra State governor of using his defection as another opportunity to launch familiar criticisms against President Tinubu. Dare maintained that such attacks hold little weight, insisting that Tinubu’s political stature, experience, and historical significance far outweigh Obi’s.

According to Dare, President Tinubu governs through deliberate policy decisions and leadership strategies, not through emotional outbursts, populist theatrics, or media-driven agitation.

He also suggested that Obi’s remarks revealed an inflated sense of political relevance, arguing that his presidential ambitions lack the democratic depth and nationwide coalition necessary to reflect Nigeria’s complex political and cultural diversity.
