Ramadan Observance: ADC Urges INEC to Shift FCT Area Council Polls

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reschedule the upcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, citing the Ramadan fasting period as the reason for its request.

Reports indicate that the elections are currently slated for Saturday, February 21, 2026.

In a letter dated January 22, 2026, and jointly signed by the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and its National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the ADC drew INEC’s attention to the fact that the proposed election date coincides with the holy month of Ramadan, a period widely observed by a significant segment of voters in the FCT.

The party explained that due to the deep religious and cultural importance of Ramadan, holding elections during this time could limit active voter participation. It therefore urged the Commission to consider moving the polls to a date after the fasting period to ensure maximum engagement in the democratic process.

According to the ADC, the request is rooted in the principle of inclusivity, stressing that every eligible citizen, regardless of religious belief, should be given a fair opportunity to exercise their constitutional voting rights without undue hardship or disadvantage.

The party further emphasized that its communication with INEC was purely institutional and in line with established procedures.

It added that it remains fully committed to due process and sought guidance on the formal requirements for submitting an official application in accordance with the Electoral Act, the Constitution, and INEC’s operational guidelines.

Reaffirming its dedication to democratic values, the ADC stated that credible elections are best achieved when electoral arrangements promote widespread participation and demonstrate sensitivity to the diverse social and religious contexts of the electorate.

The party concluded by pledging to continue advocating for electoral frameworks that prioritize citizens, respect diversity, and strengthen public trust in democratic institutions.
