Raphael Onyedika played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s commanding 3-1 victory over Uganda at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, scoring twice to help the Super Eagles finish their Group C campaign with a flawless record.

Starting an AFCON match for the first time, the Club Brugge midfielder described his brace as the culmination of years of hard work and persistence. Both goals came in the second half within a five-minute span, swinging the match decisively in Nigeria’s favour.

“I feel very happy. I cannot explain how I feel, but this is a moment I have been working towards all my life, and I’m happy that it finally came true,” Onyedika said after the final whistle.

His first goal arrived in the 62nd minute through a perfectly timed run, assisted by Samuel Chukwueze, finishing calmly between the goalkeeper’s legs. Just five minutes later, the duo combined again, with Onyedika left unmarked to slot home Nigeria’s third goal, effectively sealing the win and demonstrating the team’s dominance in the group stage.

Reflecting on the performance, Onyedika emphasized the value of preparation, patience, and seizing opportunities. “It’s about waiting for your opportunity and being ready for whatever comes, because it’s about performing and being ready,” he said.

Onyedika’s rise with the national team has been steady. He debuted for the Super Eagles in 2022 during a friendly against Algeria and scored his first international goal in 2024 against Benin Republic in the World Cup qualifiers. He has now made 19 appearances for Nigeria, establishing himself as a key figure in midfield.
