Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has publicly supported the country’s collaboration with the United States in carrying out a recent counter-terrorism air operation, insisting that rejecting assistance during a national security emergency would be unreasonable.

His reaction followed widespread debate surrounding the military action approved by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which targeted suspected extremist groups believed to be operating in parts of northern Nigeria.

According to him, Nigeria should focus on eliminating security threats rather than debating whether international partners should assist.

Details of the Military Operation

Information released by Mohammed Idris indicated that the operation was directed at suspected extremist camps located in Bauni Forest within Tangaza Local Government Area.

Authorities explained that the locations were allegedly being used by militants connected to Islamic State who were believed to be entering Nigeria from the Sahel region and coordinating with local networks.

The strikes reportedly took place during the early hours of December 26, shortly after midnight.

Military Coordination and Equipment Used

The mission involved collaboration between Nigerian security institutions and international partners. Oversight was reportedly provided by relevant national authorities, including defence leadership and senior government officials.

According to government sources, the operation deployed precision-guided munitions launched from MQ‑9 Reaper aircraft operating from maritime positions in the Gulf of Guinea.

Officials stated that the targeted militant positions were successfully neutralised during the operation.

Following the strikes, debris from the operation was reported in nearby communities including Offa and Jabo in Sokoto State.

Authorities said security teams quickly moved to secure those locations. Officials also indicated that no civilian casualties were recorded during the operation.
