A petrol tanker overturned on the Tincan Liverpool Bridge in the Apapa axis of Lagos on Monday, triggering panic and prompting crowds of residents and commuters to rush to the scene to collect leaking fuel.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tanker fell over in the early hours of the morning during peak traffic, spilling petrol underneath the bridge and causing significant gridlock in the area.
Videos from the scene captured scores of people carrying jerrycans, buckets, and various containers as they scrambled to gather the fuel pouring from the overturned tanker.
Despite the glaring risk of explosion, many individuals positioned their containers directly beneath the tanker, while others waded through pools of spilled fuel in a desperate attempt to collect as much as possible.
In a statement released via X, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) announced that traffic flow had been redirected to the opposite lane of the bridge as a safety precaution.
The agency confirmed that emergency responders, including personnel from the Lagos State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and LASTMA, were on-site working to prevent a potential disaster.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) were also present at the scene.
“Their presence is to forestall fire outbreaks, oversee the evacuation of the truck, and ensure the free movement of traffic,” the statement noted.
