A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has cautioned that any division between former presidential contenders Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi could significantly boost President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 presidential election.

Momodu sounded the warning in a post shared on 𝕏, where he stressed that disunity among opposition parties could once again tilt the electoral balance in favour of the ruling party.

According to him, Nigeria’s political history has consistently shown that fragmented opposition forces struggle to translate voter enthusiasm into victory, even when public energy and momentum appear strong.

He recalled that Atiku and Obi finished second and third respectively in the 2023 presidential election, warning that a repeat of such a split could produce similar outcomes.

Momodu praised Atiku’s political endurance, describing his long-standing resilience despite multiple electoral losses as admirable and rare in Nigerian politics.

“Buhari lost several times and even withdrew at a point, but Atiku has always been closer to the destination and never gave up,” Momodu wrote. “That level of persistence deserves recognition.”

He noted that both Atiku and Obi bring distinct strengths to the table, arguing that separating their political bases would only weaken the opposition’s collective chances.

“They came second and third in 2023,” he said. “Dividing them again will automatically give Tinubu an advantage. Look at the fresh energy Obi has generated within his base following his move to the ADC.”

Momodu added that Atiku would also reinvigorate his support base, pointing to the extensive political structures he has carefully built over decades.

“Atiku will re-energise his supporters and deploy the formidable political machinery he has been assembling deliberately since 1993, when he stepped aside for Chief Moshood Abiola during the SDP presidential primaries in Jos,” he stated.
