Rivers Crisis: ‘I Hope The President Will Have The Courage To Remove Wike’

Dickson Iroegbu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a prominent figure in the ObiDient movement, has attributed the renewed impeachment efforts against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to what he described as the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s enabling of excessive political interference. He warned that the situation threatens the stability of Nigeria’s democratic system.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Friday, Iroegbu claimed that the Rivers State House of Assembly’s sudden recall from recess specifically to initiate impeachment proceedings was intentional and orchestrated.

According to him, “Charles, the abrupt return of the State Assembly from recess had only one objective—delivering that impeachment notice.”

Iroegbu alleged that both the tone and attitude displayed by the Assembly leadership reflected the influence of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, suggesting the lawmakers were acting under external directives.

He said, “Even the Speaker’s statements echoed the exact language of the FCT Minister, repeatedly calling Sim Fubara a mistake. You could easily tell it was Wike’s script being carried out by his loyalists.”

Despite condemning the impeachment plot, Iroegbu maintained that he does not sympathize with either faction involved in the political conflict.

“I honestly have no sympathy for either side. I do not pity Sim Fubara, and I equally feel no sorrow for Nyesom Wike, who now seems to be biting off more than he can handle,” he stated.

He also criticized those he believes contributed to Wike’s political influence and national relevance.

Iroegbu added, “I have no pity for those who created the political monster now known as Nyesom Wike. The APC, with the support of the President, empowered him and provided a platform that he has used to almost derail our democracy.”

APC Accused of Deploying Wike to Undermine PDP

Iroegbu accused the ruling APC of strategically elevating Wike with the intention of destabilizing the Peoples Democratic Party.

“They positioned him to weaken, disrupt, and nearly destroy the PDP. And now, after almost succeeding, he imagines himself greater than even the President,” Iroegbu claimed.

He argued that Wike’s public statements suggest he believes he holds unilateral control over political developments in Rivers State.

He continued, “If you listened to some of the interviews he granted and meetings he held in Rivers, he repeatedly claimed that nobody—not one person—can determine what happens in the state except him.”

According to Iroegbu, the escalating clash between Wike and Governor Fubara could expose deeper internal problems within the ruling party.

“What they created is now threatening to consume everyone involved,” he said.

He therefore called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action.

Iroegbu stated, “I hope the President will summon the courage to dismiss Nyesom Wike and make it clear that this country has only one President and Commander-in-Chief.”

He further argued that Wike has already become irrelevant to the APC’s political agenda.

“The President has already abandoned him. Wike has served his purpose, and unfortunately for him, he didn’t achieve the outcome he expected,” he claimed.

On the larger political picture, Iroegbu said the ongoing crisis could ultimately benefit the opposition.

“For us in the PDP, this messy confrontation is something we want to continue because it opens up the space for us to re-strategize and reclaim the country,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the situation would eventually advantage the PDP in Rivers State.

He concluded, “Absolutely, this situation will benefit the opposition, especially the PDP, when the dust finally settles.”
