The Rivers State Government has refuted claims by the state chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) that Governor Siminalayi Fubara ordered the removal of President Bola Tinubu’s official portrait from the Government House.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honour Sirawoo, described the allegation as baseless, inflammatory, and misleading.
“The government has no policy, directive, or intention that disrespects President Tinubu or the authority of the Federal Government,” Sirawoo stated.
He emphasised that Governor Fubara maintains a cooperative and productive relationship with the Federal Government, particularly with President Tinubu and his Renewed Hope Agenda, which has already begun delivering tangible benefits to Rivers residents.
“As a matter of fact, the State Government and Governor, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, currently enjoy a stronger and more collaborative relationship with the Federal Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.
The Permanent Secretary also condemned claims suggesting that the alleged action reflected “disrespect” or “ingratitude,” noting that such remarks were entirely unfounded.
“The insinuation that the governor acted out of ingratitude or disrespect is misleading, irresponsible, and unsupported by verifiable facts. It should be disregarded,” Sirawoo stressed.
He expressed disappointment at the conduct of the youth council, accusing it of abandoning its unifying role by resorting to personal attacks and incendiary rhetoric at a time when calm and responsible engagement are needed.
“The Rivers State Government, therefore, calls on well-meaning members of the public, especially our diligent youths, to ignore and distance themselves from elements intent on promoting divisive rhetoric and falsehoods in politicising issues.
“Rivers State belongs to all of us. Political differences must never overshadow truth, civility, and our collective pursuit of peace and progress.
“Members of the public are urged to be cautious of inflammatory statements and to resist the influence of those pursuing a divisive and dubious agenda,” the statement concluded.
