Rivers Lawmaker Says Plans Are Underway to Persuade Wike to Quit PDP

Fresh political maneuvering may be unfolding in Rivers State as Senator Allwell Onyesoh, who represents Rivers East, disclosed that discussions are underway to persuade Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Onyesoh, who recently switched allegiance from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), suggested that remaining in the opposition party may no longer serve Wike’s political interests.

The lawmaker indicated that he and several associates intend to personally engage the former Rivers State governor in conversations aimed at encouraging him to consider joining the ruling party.

According to the senator, the move is being considered because some of Wike’s supporters believe the PDP has not shown sufficient appreciation for the minister’s contributions and political influence.

In remarks captured in a video circulating online, Onyesoh argued that it would be unfair for Wike to remain in a party that, in his opinion, does not adequately recognize his efforts and achievements.

He further alleged that certain actors within the PDP are attempting to weaken the minister’s political standing, a situation he said his group would strongly resist.

The Rivers East senator emphasized that Wike remains a central figure in his own political journey. He expressed appreciation for the role the former governor played in helping him achieve his ambition of representing his constituency in the Senate.

Because of that political history, Onyesoh described Wike not just as an ally but as his political leader.

The senator also suggested that sustained persuasion would continue until the minister reconsiders his position within the PDP.

He maintained that the opposition party has already benefited significantly from Wike’s influence and leadership over the years.

According to Onyesoh, the party is now struggling with internal instability and repeated leadership disputes.

He concluded that the PDP’s persistent internal conflicts have weakened its ability to regain the political strength it once held.

Commentary and Analysis

The remarks by Senator Onyesoh highlight the shifting political dynamics currently unfolding within Nigeria’s party system. Defections and political realignments often intensify as parties reposition themselves ahead of future elections.

For the PDP, the possible exit of influential figures such as Nyesom Wike would represent a significant blow, particularly given his long-standing influence in Rivers State and his national political visibility.

At the same time, efforts to persuade prominent politicians to change parties reflect broader strategies used by political actors to consolidate power or build stronger alliances.

However, such moves can also deepen divisions within existing parties while strengthening rival platforms.

Whether Wike will consider leaving the PDP remains uncertain, but discussions surrounding his political future illustrate the ongoing competition between Nigeria’s major political parties as they prepare for future electoral contests.
