The Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Benibo Anabraba, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Gossip News Now reports that Anabraba’s resignation was communicated in a letter dated January 5, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area.

In the letter, the SSG described his decision to leave the opposition party as personal, while expressing gratitude for the opportunities and support he received during his tenure as a party member.

“I appreciate the political leverage and support gained from the party during my period of membership,” Anabraba wrote.

Although he did not explicitly reveal his next political step, sources indicate that he has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Anabraba’s departure is part of a broader wave of defections from the PDP to the APC in Rivers State, following the recent defection of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The state’s Deputy Governor, Ngozi Odu, has also left the PDP to join the ruling party, further signaling a major political realignment in the region.

The move comes amid renewed political tension in Rivers, as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his former protégé, Governor Fubara, continue their political rivalry.

While Fubara is believed to have defected to the APC to position himself for a return to Government House in 2027, Wike has vowed to counter these ambitions, intensifying the political struggle in the state.
