Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has warned that Liverpool could face a tricky selection dilemma when Alexander Isak returns from injury, following the outstanding form shown by Hugo Ekitike in recent weeks.
Rooney suggested that Ekitike’s rapidly developing chemistry with fellow summer signing Florian Wirtz may complicate matters for Liverpool’s record acquisition once Isak is fully fit.
Ekitike stole the spotlight on Saturday as Liverpool overturned a deficit to claim a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield, scoring twice against his former club.
The two-goal display took the 23-year-old French striker’s tally to 15 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions this season, highlighting his growing influence since arriving on Merseyside.
According to BBC Sport, Ekitike joined Liverpool last summer from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69 million and has quickly adapted to the demands of Premier League football.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sounds, the former England captain pointed to the strong on-field relationship forming between Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, describing it as a major component of Liverpool’s attacking threat.
Rooney noted that the pair’s understanding raises legitimate questions about how Isak would reintegrate into the starting lineup once he returns to action.
‘I’d Be Worried If I Was Isak’ – Rooney
Isak, who became the Premier League’s British record signing after completing a £125 million move from Newcastle United to Liverpool, has struggled to make a significant impact since arriving at Anfield.
The Swedish international has managed just three goals in 16 appearances and has been sidelined since December after sustaining a broken leg.
Rooney admitted he would be uneasy if he were in Isak’s position.
“I’d be more worried if I was Isak, sat there watching,” Rooney said.
“His Liverpool career just hasn’t really got going yet. They paid a lot of money for him, but these two seem to have a really good understanding of each other’s game and they look like a real threat.”
The former Manchester United and Everton striker also reserved special praise for Ekitike’s finishing, particularly his second goal against Newcastle.
“It was instinctive,” Rooney added. “That little toe-poke finish reminded me of Romário.”
