Saraki Speaks on PDP Crisis: Disagreement Is Better Than Stagnation

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed optimism that the internal disagreements currently affecting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will soon be resolved, insisting that the situation should not be interpreted as a collapse of the opposition party.

Saraki shared his thoughts during a gathering of party supporters and youth members in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State. The event, organised by the PDP’s state chapter, doubled as a youth summit and a celebration marking his 63rd birthday.

Addressing the audience, the former Kwara State governor acknowledged that the party is facing internal tensions but rejected the narrative that the PDP has fallen into disarray. According to him, differences of opinion are often part of the political process and should not automatically be seen as a negative development.

He argued that debates and disagreements can sometimes help political organisations reassess their direction and avoid complacency. In his view, a party that allows discussions and differing perspectives may be healthier than one where members simply agree without progress.

Saraki remarked that while critics often portray the party as unstable, he remains convinced that the PDP still possesses the capacity to overcome its present challenges and regain cohesion.

During his remarks, he revealed that the factions currently at odds within the party have begun engaging with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in an attempt to find a solution to their differences.

According to him, these engagements are part of broader efforts aimed at restoring unity within the opposition party.

The PDP’s current crisis revolves around competing leadership claims from different blocs within the party. Several influential figures have been associated with the factions shaping the ongoing power struggle.

Among the key political actors linked to the divisions are:

  • Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory
  • Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State
  • Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State

Each of these camps has played a role in the evolving leadership dynamics that have defined the party’s internal contest for influence.

The disagreements also led to parallel leadership decisions within the party structure. While one faction aligned with Wike endorsed Abdulrahman Mohammed as acting National Chairman, another bloc associated with Makinde backed Tanimu Turaki for the same position.

These conflicting appointments further complicated the party’s leadership situation.

The tension intensified after the tenure of the PDP’s former acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, expired, creating a vacuum that competing factions attempted to fill through different arrangements.

Despite these developments, Saraki maintained that such disagreements are temporary phases that political organisations often experience.

He assured party supporters that the current dialogue and consultations among leaders would eventually lead to a resolution acceptable to all sides.

Commentary and Political Analysis

Saraki’s remarks appear to be an attempt to calm growing concerns about the stability of the PDP as Nigeria’s major opposition party. Internal conflicts, particularly those involving leadership positions, often create uncertainty within political organisations.

However, Saraki’s argument suggests that internal debate can sometimes lead to structural reforms and renewed political direction.

If the ongoing discussions with INEC and among party stakeholders succeed, the PDP could potentially emerge with a clearer leadership structure and stronger unity ahead of future elections.

Conversely, prolonged divisions could weaken the party’s ability to present a coordinated challenge to rival political parties in upcoming contests.

For now, the party’s future may depend largely on the willingness of its leading figures to compromise and prioritise collective political interests over factional ambitions.
