Fresh concerns have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as former Senate President Bukola Saraki cautions against proceeding with the party’s scheduled National Convention in Ibadan, warning that unresolved legal disputes could undermine its legitimacy.
The planned gathering, set for mid-November in Oyo State, has been thrown into doubt due to conflicting court rulings. These legal complications, Saraki believes, raise serious questions about whether decisions made at the convention would stand.
According to Gossip News Now, Saraki made his reservations known during a meeting with members of the PDP Board of Trustees reconciliation team. The delegation, led by respected party figures, engaged him in discussions aimed at addressing the internal crisis rocking the party.
Rather than endorsing the event, Saraki advised a temporary halt. He recommended that the party immediately constitute a caretaker committee to oversee its affairs while ongoing disputes are settled, stressing that rushing into the convention could deepen divisions.
He also emphasized that internal party conflicts require dialogue rather than courtroom battles. In his view, political disagreements are better resolved through inclusive discussions that bring all aggrieved stakeholders together.
In a statement shared publicly, Saraki expressed disappointment that ongoing reconciliation efforts have been hindered by competing interests. He warned that proceeding under such conditions could damage both the party’s cohesion and its credibility.
At another point, he made it clear that participating in the convention under the current circumstances would be risky, especially for loyal supporters whose political ambitions could be affected by any flawed process.
Reinforcing his stance, Saraki described the planned convention as an unnecessary exercise given the prevailing tensions. He suggested that without first resolving the legal and structural issues, the event might only escalate the crisis rather than solve it.

Reconciliation efforts are ongoing but face significant resistance
-
Concerns exist about the impact on members’ political aspirations
Commentary & Analysis
Saraki’s position highlights a deeper challenge within the PDP—balancing urgency with stability. While conventions are essential for party organization and leadership decisions, holding one amid unresolved disputes risks producing outcomes that may later be contested.
His call for a caretaker committee reflects a strategic pause rather than outright opposition. It signals a preference for rebuilding trust internally before making major decisions. This approach could help the party avoid further fragmentation, especially as it prepares for future electoral contests.
Ultimately, the situation underscores a recurring theme in Nigerian politics: legal battles often complicate internal party processes, but sustainable solutions usually emerge from negotiation and consensus.
