SDP’s Adebayo Says Dislike for Tinubu Isn’t Enough to Form Coalition

Nigeria’s evolving political landscape continues to spark conversations about possible alliances among opposition parties. However, former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has clarified that mere dissatisfaction with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not sufficient justification for forming a political coalition.

During an appearance at the 2025 Christmas Marathon and Health Walk in Akure, Adebayo addressed journalists and explained why the SDP has chosen not to rush into partnership discussions with other political actors. According to him, alliances must be built on shared principles and a clear commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians rather than on temporary political grievances.

The SDP chieftain stressed that any partnership must serve a meaningful national purpose. He noted that his party has been open to discussions but has rejected several individuals and groups who approached them because their intentions did not align with the party’s ideals. For Adebayo, credibility and integrity remain essential qualities for anyone seeking to collaborate with the SDP.

He also warned against political opportunism, suggesting that some opposition figures are attempting to take advantage of public frustration with the current administration without presenting a viable plan for governance. In his view, political actors should not merely criticize the government but must also demonstrate the ability to deliver better leadership.

At one point during the interaction, Adebayo illustrated his point with a metaphor that captured his concerns about conflicting political ambitions. He remarked that when several cooks argue over different ways to prepare a chicken—whether to roast, fry, or parboil—the chicken itself cannot make sense of their arguments. By comparison, he suggested that Nigerians cannot be expected to choose between leaders driven by clashing or self-interested agendas.

The former presidential aspirant reiterated that the SDP would not participate in alliances that simply revolve around opposing the current government. Instead, he maintained that the party prefers partnerships based on shared ideology, sound policies, and a sincere desire to reform governance.

He emphasized that replacing one administration with another that carries similar or even worse tendencies would only deepen public disappointment. Therefore, he believes political coalitions must focus on building credible alternatives rather than exploiting public dissatisfaction.

Commentary and Analysis

Adebayo’s position highlights an ongoing challenge within Nigeria’s opposition politics—balancing the urgency to unite against the ruling government with the need for ideological clarity. While coalitions can strengthen electoral competitiveness, alliances built solely on shared opposition often struggle to maintain coherence once power dynamics change.

His remarks also underscore a broader debate about the credibility of political actors seeking to lead reform movements. Many Nigerians remain skeptical of alliances that appear driven more by electoral strategy than by policy alignment or governance philosophy.

If the SDP continues to maintain this cautious approach, it may position itself as a party emphasizing principles over political expediency. However, the decision also raises questions about whether ideological purity might limit the party’s ability to build the broad alliances often necessary to win national elections.

Ultimately, Adebayo’s comments suggest that the SDP aims to distinguish itself by insisting that political collaboration must go beyond shared dislike for a sitting president. Instead, the party appears determined to pursue alliances that reflect a clear vision for governance and national development.
