Authorities in Benue State have heightened security measures after reports emerged that a large group of armed Fulani herders has moved into parts of the state, reportedly setting up camps in a valley connecting Ogbaulu Atakpa (Agatu LGA) and Akpete (Apa LGA).
According to sources close to the situation, the Nigeria Police Force, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and other tactical units have been strategically deployed to the affected areas. The aim is to prevent potential attacks, protect local communities, and maintain normal economic and social activities.
Surveillance and monitoring operations have been intensified, officials said, as residents are urged to remain vigilant. Members of the public are encouraged to promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security authorities, with further updates expected as operations continue.
Kidnapping Incident in Osun State
Separately, two residents of Ora-Igbomina, a town in Osun State bordering Kwara State, were reportedly abducted by gunmen over the weekend. The attackers targeted a private residence along Aran–Orin Road in the Papa area on Sunday night, according to a report by Punch.
Police confirmed that the abduction occurred during a brief lapse in patrols caused by heavy rainfall, which temporarily reduced police visibility in the area.
Eyewitness accounts described the assailants acting swiftly, firing gunshots into the air to instil fear before forcibly taking their victims. They escaped through nearby bush paths, demonstrating detailed knowledge of the terrain.
One resident, identified as Mulikat, stated that gunshots were heard around 11:30 p.m. and that attempts by community members to pursue the kidnappers into the bush were unsuccessful. Observers noted that the attackers exploited the darkness and the network of bush paths linking Osun and Kwara States to evade capture.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have promised to increase security patrols to prevent further incidents and safeguard local communities.
