Senator Godiya Akwashiki, the lawmaker representing Nasarawa North senatorial district under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has died at the age of 52 following a prolonged illness.
A family source confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the senator passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, while receiving treatment at a hospital in India.
The source described his death as a significant loss for the constituency and the state, highlighting Akwashiki’s dedication to development and effective leadership.
“Senator Akwashiki was arguably the most impactful legislator Nasarawa North has ever had. His commitment to service left a lasting imprint across the district,” the family insider noted.
Akwashiki’s tenure was marked by consistent community development. He notably became the first senator in the zone to re-contest and secure a second term, with projects visible in virtually every part of the constituency.
Before his election to the Nigerian Senate in 2019, he held key leadership positions in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, including Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon, Nasarawa State, Akwashiki’s death has sent shockwaves through the state’s political arena. He was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and successfully secured re-election in the 2023 general elections.
