Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented the Nasarawa North senatorial district on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has passed away at the age of 52 after battling a long-term illness.
According to information confirmed by a family source to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the lawmaker died on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, while undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in India.
His passing has been described as a major setback for both his constituency and Nasarawa State, with close associates emphasizing his strong commitment to leadership and grassroots development throughout his years in office.
Akwashiki was widely regarded as one of the most influential representatives the Nasarawa North zone had produced, with supporters noting that his service left a visible and lasting impact across the district.
During his time in the Senate, he was known for driving community-focused projects, and he made history as the first senator from the area to seek and win a second term, with initiatives reportedly spread across many communities within the constituency.
Before moving to the National Assembly in 2019, he had built a significant political career in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he served first as Majority Leader and later as Deputy Speaker.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki’s death has generated widespread reactions within the state’s political landscape. He was initially elected to the Senate in 2019 and successfully returned after winning re-election in the 2023 general polls.
