Several explosions tore through parts of Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, in the early hours of Saturday, plunging multiple neighbourhoods into darkness and sparking widespread alarm among residents.
According to reports, the first blast occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. local time. A CNN correspondent in Caracas, Osmary Hernandez, described the explosions as extremely forceful, saying the impact was strong enough to cause buildings to vibrate.
“One of the explosions was so intense that my window shook,” she said.
Following the blasts, electricity was cut off in several areas of the city, while residents also reported hearing aircraft flying unusually low over affected districts.
As of the time of this report, authorities have not confirmed the cause of the explosions.
Footage obtained and verified by CNN showed thick plumes of smoke rising into the night sky as city lights flickered below. In one clip, an orange glow appeared at the base of a smoke column moments before a bright flash and a loud explosion echoed in the distance.
Local news platforms, including Efecto Cocuyo and Tal Cual Digital, reported that similar explosions were heard in La Guaira State, located north of Caracas, as well as in Higuerote, a coastal town in Miranda State.
The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened diplomatic and security tensions between Venezuela and the United States. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Washington was considering decisive action over alleged drug trafficking activities linked to Venezuela.
In October, Trump disclosed that he had authorised the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to operate within Venezuelan territory as part of efforts to curb illegal drug and migrant flows from the South American country.
