A festive New Year gathering in southern Switzerland ended in tragedy after a fire broke out at a popular ski destination, leaving several people dead and others injured.
The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday at Crans-Montana, an upscale Alpine resort located in the Valais canton and well known for attracting large holiday crowds.
According to local authorities, the blaze started around 1:30 a.m. inside Le Constellation lounge bar, where New Year celebrations were underway at the time.
Valais police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion confirmed the incident, stating that emergency services responded swiftly but were confronted with multiple casualties. He noted that while several individuals sustained injuries, there were also confirmed fatalities.
Officials have not yet released the exact number of those killed or hurt, explaining that rescue efforts and investigations are still ongoing. The cause of the fire has also not been established as of the time of reporting.
Authorities said more details would be provided later in the day, with a joint media briefing planned involving the police and the cantonal public prosecutor around 10 a.m. local time.
Crans-Montana, famed for its luxury ski resorts and vibrant nightlife during the festive season, was filled with visitors at the time of the incident, making the tragedy particularly distressing for both residents and tourists.
