Controversy has surrounded Chioma Adeleke, wife of Nigerian music icon Davido, following her appearance at the 68th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
The ceremony, held at the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday night, saw Davido nominated in the Best African Music Performance category. He attended with Chioma, his elder sister Sharon Adeleke, and other associates. Chioma’s debut on the global stage featured a sheer dress that immediately sparked widespread debate across social media.
Sheriff Oborevwori, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Success, publicly criticised the outfit. Writing on his Facebook page, he described the dress as inappropriate for an international event of such prominence, asserting that it failed to reflect Nigerian cultural values and could negatively influence young Nigerians.
The governor’s aide emphasised that as a public figure and role model, Chioma has a responsibility to project modesty and uphold cultural identity. He also suggested that Davido could have provided better guidance regarding her choice of attire.
In his statement, Ossai Success wrote:
“I am disappointed in Chioma Davido’s dressing. She shouldn’t have been half-naked at the Grammy. She failed to represent Nigerian culture properly and instead embraced a revealing Western style.
“As a role model to many young Nigerian ladies, her international appearance could negatively influence them. I also expected Davido to guide her better. Cultural representation matters, and it is crucial. I am disappointed in Davido for allowing her to dress this way. I am truly disappointed.”
The remarks have intensified ongoing discussions about celebrity fashion, cultural representation, and the influence of public figures on global stages, with Chioma’s Grammy look continuing to generate divided opinions online.
