Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday led a high-powered All Progressives Congress (APC) delegation to formally welcome Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, into the ruling party.
According to reports, Shettima departed Abuja alongside several APC governors and senior party leaders for Yenagoa to receive Governor Diri, who recently confirmed his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Diri publicly announced his decision during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day ceremony held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, stating that the move was in the best interest of the state.
Diri, who resigned from the PDP on October 15, had been involved in quiet negotiations with APC leaders for several weeks ahead of his defection.
Speaking on Sunday, the governor acknowledged that his decision may initially be misunderstood but assured Bayelsans that clarity would come with time.
He emphasized that governance is about delivering development, promising that his administration will continue to prioritise progress and ensure citizens benefit from the dividends of democracy.
Governor Diri also highlighted the peace and security currently enjoyed in Bayelsa, urging residents to remain grateful and optimistic about the state’s future under his leadership.
