Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday led a senior delegation of the All Progressives Congress to Bayelsa State as the ruling party formally received Governor Douye Diri into its fold. The visit to Yenagoa marked the latest stage in Diri’s political transition after his confirmed departure from the Peoples Democratic Party.
The APC delegation reportedly included governors and top party figures who travelled from Abuja to join the reception, underscoring the significance the ruling party attaches to Diri’s arrival. His entry is being viewed as an important political development, especially given Bayelsa’s place in the wider calculations of national party strength.
Governor Diri had earlier made his decision public during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day ceremony at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa. At the event, he explained that leaving the PDP was a step he believed would serve the interests of the state better.
Before the public announcement, the governor had already been engaged in quiet discussions with APC leaders for several weeks. His resignation from the PDP on October 15 appears to have been the product of a carefully managed process rather than a sudden political decision. According to Gossip News Now, the move was shaped by ongoing negotiations that set the stage for his eventual reception by the ruling party.
Diri admitted that not everyone would immediately understand his choice, but he appealed for patience and urged Bayelsans to judge the decision over time. He suggested that the reasoning behind the move would become clearer as events unfold and as the state continues on its development path.
He also emphasized that politics, in his view, should remain tied to practical governance and visible progress. Rather than dwell on partisan arguments, the governor said his administration would stay focused on delivering benefits to the people and ensuring that governance continues to produce meaningful results.
In addition, Diri pointed to the relative peace and security currently being enjoyed in Bayelsa, calling on residents to remain thankful and hopeful about the direction of the state. His message suggested that continuity of stability and development remains central to how he wants his leadership to be judged.
The formal welcome led by Shettima therefore goes beyond symbolism. It signals that the APC sees Diri as a politically valuable addition, while the governor himself appears eager to frame the switch as a strategic choice rooted in governance rather than mere party convenience.
Commentary and Analysis
Diri’s defection is politically significant because it joins state-level leadership, party strategy, and federal influence in one move. The presence of the vice president and other APC leaders at the reception sends a strong message that the ruling party intends to make the governor’s arrival look like a major gain.
At the same time, Diri’s effort to present the decision as a step for development shows an awareness that defections are often met with suspicion. By focusing on peace, progress, and the practical needs of Bayelsa, he appears to be trying to shape public opinion around performance rather than party loyalty alone.
