Legendary Nigerian Juju musician Oluwashina Akanbi Peters, popularly known as Sir Shina Peters, has opened up about his early rise to fame and adulthood, revealing that he became a father at just 14 years old.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, the 67-year-old music icon reflected on his remarkable journey, describing how quickly life moved for him as a young boy.
“I started my career at the age of 10. I had my first child at 14. I bought my first car at 13. I built my first house at 16,” he said.
Despite his incredible early achievements, Sir Shina Peters admitted that he has no plans to return fully to music, saying today’s music scene feels unfamiliar and uninspiring to him.
He noted that while his fans—most of whom are outside his Yoruba audience—continue to demand new music, he struggles to connect with the current creative atmosphere.
“About 65 per cent of my fans are Igbos, not Yorubas. They keep asking me for new songs, but I can’t just go to the studio. The environment isn’t inspiring; I don’t even know what to sing,” he explained.
Born in 1958 in Lagos, Shina Peters is widely celebrated as the pioneer of Afrojuju, a vibrant fusion of Juju music, Afrobeat, and funk.
He rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s with hit albums like Ace and Shina Peters Live, earning a legendary status in Nigeria’s music history and influencing generations of artists that followed.
