Nigerian broadcaster Chinedu Ani, popularly known as Nedu, has claimed that certain young women in Lagos intentionally become pregnant simply to gain weight.
Speaking on his programme on Max 102.3 FM, the media personality said he has been hearing disturbing reports about what he believes is an increasing habit among very slender ladies.
According to him, some women deliberately conceive not because they want a child, but because they believe pregnancy will make them look fuller.
He explained that their primary aim is to put on pregnancy-induced weight.
Nedu further alleged that many of these ladies terminate the pregnancy once they achieve the body size they desire.
He said: “There’s something some girls in Nigeria do now… especially very slim ones. I’ve heard of ladies doing this. When they want to get bigger, they intentionally get pregnant. After adding pregnancy weight, they go ahead and remove the pregnancy.”
His revelation stirred conversations online, prompting many users to share stories that appear to support his claim.
Chioma Sucre: “It’s true. I know a colleague I could’ve sworn was pregnant—her hips and stomach grew, then suddenly her belly disappeared but the hips remained.”
Krishy Beauty: “This gist has been around for a long time. Now many of them rely on supplements. Meanwhile, it’s the same weight I’m struggling to lose!”
Lolo Ezenwa: “I’m not shocked. I’ve heard it before. Some ladies even go to chemists or pharmacies looking for drugs that will make them add weight.”
Edafe Fego: “This isn’t new at all. Some girls intentionally get pregnant to enlarge their breasts and body, then abort afterwards. They hit the gym afterwards to shape up. I heard about this over five years ago. They don’t hide it.”
Precious Nnenna: “A doctor I know told me the same thing. She said many of them end up damaging their wombs, but they don’t mind as long as they get the body they want.”
Chimdi Anucha: “Others purposely take HIV medication because it makes them gain weight.”
James Felisha: “It’s true… some girls intentionally get pregnant before their birthdays so they can look bigger in their birthday photos—and then they abort the pregnancy. I don’t understand why anyone would put herself through that kind of pain and even take a life just because of weight. The same weight I’m trying so hard to lose. Na wa o.”
