Venezuelan authorities have launched a nationwide manhunt targeting alleged collaborators in the wake of President Nicolás Maduro’s capture by U.S. military special forces.
The crackdown comes after a state of emergency was declared, effective Saturday, with the full decree published on Monday.
Under the directive, police units at federal, state, and municipal levels have been instructed to identify and apprehend anyone suspected of aiding the U.S.-led operation that led to Maduro’s detention. Authorities described the initiative as a critical measure to protect national security and restore order following what they called a foreign-backed intervention.
Earlier reports from several U.S. media outlets indicated that American forces may have received assistance on the ground during the operation. Sources suggest that a member of Maduro’s inner circle allegedly provided repeated intelligence on the former president’s movements, fueling suspicions of a high-level breach within his administration.
In the aftermath, Venezuela’s National Union of Press Workers reported that at least 14 journalists were temporarily detained. All have since been released, though the union expressed concern over press freedom amid the ongoing state of emergency.
Officials have yet to release details on the identities of the alleged collaborators or provide additional information regarding the full scope of the security operation.
