The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the traditional ruler and first Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom, Ateke Tom, to refrain from getting involved in political activities in Rivers State.
Wike issued the warning during a courtesy visit to the monarch’s palace as part of his ongoing “thank you” tour of local government areas, which kicked off in Okrika Local Government Area.
Speaking directly to the monarch, the former Rivers governor noted that political activities would soon intensify across the state and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace within the kingdom. He explained that key political decisions concerning Rivers State had already been taken and stressed that his visit was based on their long-standing personal relationship rather than politics.
Wike urged the traditional ruler to maintain neutrality and avoid being drawn into partisan affairs, especially as political tensions continue to rise.
“Politics will soon begin, but I am not asking you to be part of it,” Wike said. “Remain in your role as a traditional ruler and allow us to play our political game.”
He further advised the monarch to avoid any action that could be interpreted as political interference, while acknowledging that personal preferences were natural.
“I don’t want anyone to say tomorrow that you interfered. Don’t put your hands in it. You may have your own views privately, but publicly, stay out and let us handle our affairs,” he added.
The minister explained that any political disagreements would be addressed by the parties involved, noting that the monarch could step in only to restore peace if the situation demanded it.
“If any issue arises, you can call us and we will resolve it. But I want you to know that it will not be business as usual again,” Wike warned.
Addressing the people of Okrika separately, Wike said the purpose of his visit was to express gratitude for the consistent support he has received from the community and the wider Ijaw nation.
“We came to appreciate our people who have stood by us over the years. The people of Okrika and the Ijaw nation have supported us immensely, and I felt it was important to personally thank them,” he said.
He assured them that their loyalty was deeply valued and would not be taken for granted.
Wike also expressed concern over the current political climate in Rivers State and vowed not to allow himself to be sidelined politically.
“We have all taken a clear decision on what to do. Those who are close to you will explain it to you — not for participation, just for awareness. You are my friend,” he concluded.
