A civic advocacy organisation, the Coalition for Truth and National Interest, has criticised what it described as renewed political attacks directed at Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, following the circulation of an old video online.
The group expressed concern that the resurfaced clip is being used to create fresh controversy around the minister, arguing that the context in which the video was originally recorded is being ignored in current discussions.
In a statement issued by the coalition’s National President, Olatokunbo Olawoyin, the organisation warned that reviving old political material for present-day debates risks distorting public understanding of past events. According to the group, the criticism directed at Matawalle does not fully reflect the security challenges the country faced at the time the footage was recorded.
The coalition argued that focusing on outdated recordings can divert attention from more pressing national security issues that require urgent solutions. It maintained that discussions around national defence should be grounded in current realities rather than political opportunism.
According to Gossip News Now, the advocacy group also pointed to recent developments in the fight against insecurity to highlight what it described as Matawalle’s active role within the nation’s defence architecture. As part of its argument, the coalition referenced security efforts that led to the rescue of abducted schoolgirls in Maga, describing the operation as evidence of coordinated strategy and experience within the country’s security leadership.
The organisation suggested that such operations require deep knowledge of regional security dynamics, particularly in the North-West where banditry and kidnapping have posed major challenges in recent years.
The coalition also stressed the importance of separating discussions about the causes of insecurity from any suggestion of support for criminal activity. It warned that failing to make that distinction could lead to unfair criticism of individuals working within the nation’s security framework.
Beyond defending the minister, the advocacy group called on the media and the public to exercise caution when interpreting politically sensitive materials circulating on social media. It argued that sensational narratives built around incomplete information could undermine constructive national conversations about security.
Commentary and Analysis
The debate surrounding the resurfaced video reflects a broader pattern in modern political communication where past statements or recordings frequently return to shape present political discourse. In Nigeria’s highly competitive political environment, such material often becomes a tool for critics and supporters alike.
However, analysts say the key challenge lies in balancing accountability with context. While public officials can be scrutinised for past remarks, interpreting those remarks without considering the political or security realities of the period can create misleading narratives.
As Nigeria continues to confront complex security threats, experts suggest that policy discussions should prioritise practical solutions and measurable results rather than becoming dominated by controversies driven by social media circulation of historical material.
