Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has stood by his decision to start Ademola Lookman in Nigeria’s recent World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Rwanda, despite the winger’s lack of playing time at Atalanta.

Lookman’s inclusion drew criticism from fans and pundits who questioned why a player without a competitive appearance this season was trusted in such crucial fixtures.

The 27-year-old forward endured a difficult summer after Atalanta blocked his proposed €40 million move to Inter Milan. The fallout saw him miss pre-season training, face disciplinary action, and struggle for game time under new manager Ivan Juric.

However, Chelle praised Lookman’s attitude and fitness during the international break, describing him as indispensable to the Super Eagles’ tactical setup.

“It was difficult to do without a player of this level. Lookman was in good shape, training hard, and showing great professionalism,” Chelle told AfricaFoot. “I spoke with him before camp and knew I could trust him. Initially, I thought he might only manage 30 minutes due to his lack of rhythm, but it was important for him to play again.”

Lookman made his first appearance of the season on September 21 in Atalanta’s 3–0 defeat to Torino, before remaining an unused substitute against Juventus days later. He is expected to return in Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Club Brugge.

Chelle added that tensions between Lookman and his club are beginning to ease.

“Apparently, both sides are taking steps towards reconciliation, which is good news,” the coach said. “Lookman is a great player but also a quiet, introverted man. I believe his management and coaching staff now recognize the team needs him, and Ademola needs to play.”

Lookman, who has 31 caps and eight goals for Nigeria, remains under contract with Atalanta until 2027.
