Birmingham City defender and Super Eagles star Bright Osayi-Samuel has been handed a one-match suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season during his team’s 1-0 victory over Preston North End on Tuesday night.
The English Football Association (FA) confirmed the automatic ban, in accordance with its disciplinary regulations, as published on the EFL’s official website.
Osayi-Samuel was booked just 12 minutes into the encounter after a foul on Preston striker Daniel Jebbison. The caution adds to earlier yellow cards he picked up in matches against Ipswich Town, Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City, and Swansea City this season.
The 26-year-old right-back joined Birmingham City on a free transfer during the summer window following the expiration of his contract with Fenerbahce. Since arriving, he has established himself as a regular in the Championship side, making nine appearances so far this season.
Tuesday’s game at Deepdale marked Osayi-Samuel’s first league start since September 30, as he was drafted into the starting lineup after Patrick Roberts suffered a late injury in the warm-up.
Having only recently returned from his own fitness concerns, the Nigerian defender was substituted early in the second half as a precaution.
His latest booking means he will miss Birmingham City’s next league fixture, serving a one-match suspension. However, he remains eligible for selection in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup CAF playoffs against Gabon in November.
