The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 Group C campaign with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Fès.
Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi rose highest to head home a precise cross from Alex Iwobi, giving the Super Eagles a deserved lead heading into halftime after sustained pressure.
Tanzania came out determined after the break, and Victor Osimhen briefly thought he had extended Nigeria’s lead, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. The East Africans capitalised on the reprieve moments later when Charles M’Mombwa netted in the 50th minute, leveling the score after a neat setup from Novatus Miroshi.
Parity lasted barely two minutes, however, as Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s advantage with a crisp finish, once again set up by the influential Alex Iwobi. His vision and timing proved decisive in shifting momentum back to the Super Eagles, who then controlled the tempo effectively despite Tanzania’s persistent pressing.
Head coach Eric Chelle made tactical substitutions around the hour mark, bringing on Moses Simon and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to inject fresh energy, while Paul Onuachu replaced Osimhen to see out the closing stages. Tanzania responded with changes of their own, introducing Denis Kibu, Kelvin John, and Haji Mnoga in search of a late equaliser, but Nigeria’s defence remained resolute.
The win lifts Nigeria to the top of Group C, providing a solid foundation as they prepare for their next challenge against Tunisia, aiming to maintain momentum in the opening stages of AFCON 2025.
