Super Eagles Rise to 38th in Latest FIFA Rankings

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has recorded a slight improvement in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, climbing to 38th position globally. The updated standings, released in November 2025, show Nigeria advancing three places compared to the previous ranking.

Although the team recently endured the setback of failing to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, their recent match results still contributed positively to their points tally. The ranking reflects a period that mixed promising performances with moments of frustration for Nigerian supporters.

According to Gossip News Now, FIFA evaluated 149 international matches played worldwide before publishing the updated rankings. Nigeria’s recent fixtures played an important role in their movement on the table.

One of the highlights of the team’s recent outings was an impressive 4–1 victory against Gabon, demonstrating the squad’s attacking strength. The Super Eagles also faced DR Congo in a tense encounter that ended 1–1 in regulation time, before Nigeria eventually lost 4–3 in a penalty shootout during the African play-off.

Even though the penalty defeat denied the team a chance to progress further in the qualification pathway, the combination of those performances was still enough to improve Nigeria’s ranking points.

The Super Eagles now hold 1,502.46 points, maintaining their position among the continent’s top sides. However, they remain fifth in Africa, with several nations still ranked ahead of them.

Within the African hierarchy, the top five teams currently appear in this order:

  • Morocco – leading Africa with 1,713.12 points and ranked 11th globally
  • Senegal – second in Africa with 1,648.07 points, sitting 19th worldwide
  • Egypt – holding 34th position globally with 1,520.68 points
  • Algeria – slightly behind Egypt with 1,516.37 points
  • Nigeria – fifth on the continent with 1,502.46 points

The competition remains tight among African teams, as several countries closely trail Nigeria in the standings. Tunisia, ranked 40th, sits just behind the Super Eagles, while Ivory Coast and DR Congo also remain within striking distance.

Morocco continues to dominate the continental rankings, maintaining a significant points advantage over Nigeria and other African teams.

On the global stage, the battle for the top positions remains intense. Spain currently holds the number-one spot in the world rankings, followed by Argentina and France. Meanwhile, Brazil climbed two places to fifth, reshuffling positions among the leading football nations.

FIFA noted that these ranking adjustments were shaped by results from several international competitions and qualification matches, particularly those connected to the 2026 World Cup cycle.

Commentary and Analysis

Nigeria’s climb in the FIFA rankings may provide a small measure of encouragement for fans following the disappointment of missing out on the upcoming World Cup. The ranking increase suggests that the team remains competitive on the international stage despite recent setbacks.

However, the gap between Nigeria and Africa’s top-ranked teams highlights the work still required to restore the Super Eagles to the continent’s elite level. Stronger consistency in international competitions and improved performance in qualifiers will likely be key to future progress.

As preparations continue for upcoming tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles will have another opportunity to rebuild confidence and strengthen their standing both in Africa and globally.
