Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has opened up about a deeply personal struggle that nearly drove him to quit football, following the tragic loss of both his parents within a short span. The 27-year-old revealed that the grief of losing his father and then his mother just two months later left him questioning his future and strength, both on and off the pitch.
In a heartfelt interview with ACLSports on Wednesday, Nwabali recalled the overwhelming emotions he faced after his mother’s passing, coming so soon after his father’s death. “I try to keep a lot of things to myself, try to move on, try to be stronger,” he said, noting the immense pain he felt while coping with such profound loss.
He admitted that there were moments when he considered leaving football entirely. “Most times I feel like quitting, you know? Because of mom and dad. My mom was so dear to me. Really, it’s so painful. It’s really hard talking about my mom today,” Nwabali confessed, emphasizing that the heartbreak extended far beyond the sport.
Reflecting on the impact, the Super Eagles’ shot-stopper described the dual loss as an emotional weight that affects anyone, not just athletes. “It hurts. Yeah, it really hurts. I try not to dwell on it, but now I’m here. It’s not a nice feeling—not just for a soccer player, but for any human being—to lose both parents at the same time,” he said.

Despite the deep grief, Nwabali credited his teammates with helping him persevere in football. “I’m standing here playing football. I could remember telling my captain I wanted to leave the game. But with the help of some teammates, I keep going. It really hurts, but I’m still here,” he said, showing the resilience that has kept him at the top of his game.
