Super Eagles Threaten Strike Over Unpaid AFCON 2025 Bonuses

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are reportedly considering a boycott of training ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final clash against Algeria in Morocco, amid a dispute over unpaid bonuses.

Despite maintaining a perfect record in the tournament, winning all four of their matches in the group and knockout stages, players and coaching staff have yet to receive their win bonuses. Nigeria secured victories against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and most recently, Mozambique, with a resounding 4-0 triumph.

Renowned sports journalist Olúwashínà Okeleji confirmed the situation on 𝕏, writing:
“Players and coaching staff of #Nigeria are waiting on #AFCON2025 bonus payments. Win bonuses from four matches – vs Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda & Mozambique – have yet to be received. Squad remain focused but will NOT train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if this isn’t resolved.”

The Super Eagles, who top Group C and have scored more goals than any other team in the tournament, were scheduled to travel to Marrakech on Thursday ahead of the quarterfinal. However, unless their bonuses are paid, they plan to remain in Fez and have already declined to participate in training sessions.

This is not the first time the Nigerian squad has taken such action. In November 2025, ahead of critical World Cup playoff matches against Gabon, the players staged a strike over unpaid dues, which was resolved within 24 hours.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has faced repeated criticism for delays in player and staff payments, with reports indicating that even head coach Eric Chelle was owed outstanding fees before the tournament began.

The Super Eagles are set to face Algeria in the AFCON 2025 quarter-final on Saturday at 5 p.m.
