The Supreme Court of Nigeria has ruled that the corruption trial involving former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, his two sons, and several associates must continue at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
A five-man panel of the apex court delivered two unanimous judgments on Friday, overturning the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division. The appeals, filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on behalf of the Federal Government, sought to challenge the appellate court’s July 25, 2023 ruling which upheld a no-case submission from Lamido and the other defendants.
The Court of Appeal had dismissed the 37-count charge against them, stating that the Federal High Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter.
However, in the lead judgment, Justice Abubakar Umar set aside that decision and restored the ruling originally delivered by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court.
Justice Umar affirmed that the trial court acted correctly when it dismissed the no-case submissions and ordered the defendants to proceed to open their defence.
According to the EFCC, Lamido allegedly misused his office during his tenure from 2007 to 2015 by laundering funds believed to be kickbacks from contractors handling government projects in Jigawa State.
He is being tried alongside his sons, Aminu and Mustapha Lamido, as well as Aminu Wada Abubakar, and two companies—Bamaina Holdings Limited and Speeds International Limited—on multiple counts related to money laundering.
